Norfolk Landsharks AAC
The Landsharks began in the September of 2000 with three friends. The nearest American car scene at the time was about an hour away, and along with themselves there was a number of American car owners in and around the East Dereham area, so they decided to all get together and to arrange a regular meeting place. They decided upon The Lodge public house, North Tuddenham, which was on the A47 just outside of Dereham, it had a good size car park and a landlord who was happy to welcome them.
The idea at this time was somewhere for people with an interest in American cars to be able to get together with others to chat, talk tech, look at each others cars, and cruise to shows together. They didn't want the formality of a club with fee's and all the politics that go with it. They wanted the club to be more like a gathering of friends with the same interests.
They decided they would need a good name, they wanted something catchy. Guy King (founding member)and his wife Sarah remembered an article in a magazine they saw once, calling the car in the article `a landshark', and thought that would make a great name, everyone agreed and that's what they decided on. Originally `Dereham' Landsharks, within a year they had over 40 members from all over Norfolk and decided they would call themselves just that, and became `Norfolk Landsharks.'
For their first anniversary, with the help of the landlord of the Lodge, the club laid on a barbecue a year to the day of their first meet, and in the tradition of English Septembers, it was overcast and it rained. Never the less the day went well with many new faces arriving, the Lodge had over 50 cars outside and the scene was set for a regular yearly meet to be christened the `Supermeet'.
Over the course of the next twelve months the club grew in size and membership to over 60 cars of various vintage, from Fins & Chrome to Muscle, and from Vintage to Rods. Many of the cars owned by club members have been photographed for various magazines and are well known in the American car scene around the country.
For 2002's Supermeet a different venue was called for with more space, this year it was going to become a car show in its own right. A local land owner with ties to the club offered the use of his field which was used for horse jumping shows. The 2nd Supermeet was an even bigger success, with trade stands, food, bar and a band, along with a selection of trophies they had more people than they hoped for and over 75 cars on the show field, coming from all over the country, one from as far away as Derbyshire! The one thing that unfortunately did remain the same was the damn weather! It rained constantly until around one o'clock in the afternoon, but even with this the cars and people kept arriving through the gate.
Within two years the club had gone from a small group of friends to one of the largest clubs in East Anglia.
By the beginning of the 2003 show season, the club had managed to secure a sponsorship deal with Ultimate Spares of America, They had previously been supported by Computer options in Dereham until the owners, club members also, sold the business. This helped the Landsharks maintain their subscription free stance, website and paper printing costs and still manage to put on a large yearly show and arrange their own designed merchandise, which had all previously had to be paid, up front, out of key members pockets.
The 3rd Annual Supermeet was to become the highlight of 2003. After problems with using the same location as 2002, the leading members approached Dereham Football Club for use of their facilities. The Football club were keen to promote local awareness for themselves, and also the Landsharks as a Dereham based club and a supportive partnership was formed.
The date for the Supermeet was brought forward too August in hope of better weather. This turned out to being one extreme to the other, with it turning out to be the hottest day of the year and reaching over 100ºf. After months of organisation the day went without a hitch. With Trade stands, including Ultimate Spares of America, Liquid Glass, and Millers Oils among many, trying to stay cool in the shade. Music was supplied by `The Small Town Giants' with their blend of rock `n' Roll and Blues, playing across the show field. The Football club supplied the Bar and food in the club house selling gallons of ice cold beers and cokes. With the array of entertainment on the show field catering for all ages in the fierce heat of the day, the ice cream van sold out buy the middle of the afternoon. By midday there were over 100 cars on the show field, coming from all over the country, judging for the trophies was going to be the hardest job of the day, with the most impressive array of American motors on the field. The day was supported by the local newspapers and the local radio sent down one of their `Black Thunder' female reporters to report live, with one of the Leading members giving her a muscle car ride to remember. With a minimal fee of £2.00 at the gate, the club, after recouping cost, managed to give £600 towards local charities and forged many new bonds for the years to come.
As the 2004 show season approaches thanks to these bonds formed, the Landsharks can offer their Club members a discount at Ultimate Spares of America and W.A.S.P. with discount at Adrian Flux Insurance among others. Club Merchandise at cost. Along with a yearly car show, Christmas party, AGM, Quarterly news letter and its very own website all at no cost to members. The Landsharks are set to make their presence known at a number of shows in the next year and the future for the American Car scene in Norfolk, and indeed the rest of the country seems to be getting better year by year.
If you are interested in joining the club or would like to come along and see a great selection of American cars the Landsharks meet every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at the Lodge Public House, North Tuddenham, just of the A47 outside Dereham. The 4th Annual Supermeet will be held again this year on the football fields at `Aldiss Park' East Dereham Football club, Norwich Road, Dereham on the 8th August 2004. 10 am till 5pm.
